Fed Cuts Borrowing Costs for Second Instance This Year Amid Economic Uncertainty

The US monetary authority reduced interest rates on Wednesday, marking the second reduction this year during economic turbulence originating from the government closure and tariff policies.

Decision Arrives at Extraordinary Time for Central Bank

The decision to reduce the benchmark interest rate by a quarter point to a span of 3.75% to 4% comes at an extraordinary moment for the Fed. The institution has been under immense pressure to lower borrowing costs despite ongoing price increases.

Fed Statement Notes Job Market Changes

In a announcement, the Federal Reserve said that the unemployment rate had increased but stays modest. “Employment growth have slowed,” the release reads. “Price increases has risen and stays moderately high.”

Government Shutdown Complicates Fed’s Job

The ongoing government stoppage, now one of the longest in American history, has also complicated the Fed’s job. Gathering of key financial statistics has been indefinitely halted as employees at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are furloughed during the shutdown.

Data Gap Affects Policy Decisions

The Federal Reserve usually analyzes BLS data to assess employment trends, including the number of new jobs added to the economy and the current unemployment rate. The most recent employment data was released in early September, before the shutdown, and gave a relatively bleak overview of the employment scene in August.

The number of positions created to the economy in August was down by over 100k since the spring, and joblessness rose to 4.3% – the peak since three years ago.

Private Data Indicate Ongoing Slowdown

Though BLS was set to release last month’s job market report in the start of last month, it halted its release when the closure started. Employment data company a leading payroll processor reported earlier this month that the private sector eliminated 32,000 jobs in September, a sign that the job market is still decelerating.

“Supply as well as demand for labor has fallen significantly,” Fed chair Jerome Powell stated earlier this month, a trend he had previously said comes from trade and immigration measures.

Price Data Shows Moderate Rise

Though the bureau’s jobs report has been paused, the agency still released its price statistics for last month that indicated that costs are rising, although gradually. Prices rose 3% over the last year, the highest since the start of the year. In spring, the annual inflation rate was two point three percent, the lowest it has been since three years ago. The central bank’s goal inflation rate is two percent.
