Tutoring a Toddler to Develop into an 'English Gentleman' – Is It Worth the Money?

Child education concept
The firm responsible for the advert explains that what appears like "extravagance or peculiarity" is in fact "intentional commitment in early-stage education".

"A household based in North London seeks an remarkable and skilled instructor to assist their most junior child on his initial journey to turning into an British gentleman."

Upon seeing this listing, you might readily skip the wording "first-steps" as mere a turn of phrase.

But, it might be the crucial aspect of this unusual job advert, as it aims to recruit a teacher for a 12-month-old.

Many of submissions have already been received since the unnamed family posted their request for the £180,000 per year tutor, who has to be "an exceptional individual".

In recent few weeks, the advert has received notice across the press, with many wondering why?

Progressive Approach

The CEO, head and founder of a global tutoring firm, which is helping the family in their hunt, said that despite first doubt, he viewed the plan "forward-looking", and "advanced".

When he consulted the family, he noted they recognized the unconventional aspect of their request, and how early in age their son is.

However, they stated that they "didn't want to wait any longer" to get a tutor, as they had postponed until their older child was five, and by that age "cultural influence had by then set in".

But what did the family indicate by "cultural predisposition"?

It's "everything", he replied. "How you eat, the way you speak".

He explained the elder child had adopted "extremely delicate, body language" from the family, and had adopted their cultural norms. The family told him they hoped to prevent history to repeat itself with their new baby.

The strategy: To bring in a British tutor, who should speak with Received Pronunciation, to guide the baby from the very start.

Tutoring discussion
Tutors International state the post has started a broader debate about how families perceive learning, elitism and the part of family background in learning.

Osmotic Learning

"Much of the learning at the beginning here is rather absorbed naturally," said Adam.

It's by means of this natural absorption that the family are hoping the child will adopt the UK customs they wish to cultivate.

Adam noted the tutor needed to be an individual who attended "prestigious academies – comparable categories of schools as the family plan to send their son to".

"The tutor just has to be the suitable individual, they'll be carrying out things they don't even know they're doing, just naturally," he commented.

Expense Not a Factor

The family told the expert the selected educator should preferably also have understanding of or interest in riding, skiing, artistic pursuits and music so as to influence the child in a broad spectrum of interests.

More than that though, he explained the family desired the tutor to register the child on a selection of lessons so the child would be "equestrian training and starting an tool by the time they are around three years old".

In the family's view, helping their son become a "UK sophisticate" will result in accomplishment and open doors.

"Considering the advantages and disadvantages of that, because it's definitely a class statement," he comments.

Yet, notwithstanding all this guidance in "English culture", would the child adopt what is termed cultural influence from the international family he lives with anyway?

"Yes", said Adam. "The parents realize this may not work, but they've just taken the attitude of, 'let's give it a go and let's go as early as we can', because the cost of it is not relevant," he stated.

Impractical

There are some in the private teaching field who express similar doubts.

Another CEO, head and founder of Blue Education, who supplies personal educators, stated that "the journey of becoming bicultural, or indeed, discovering oneself, is something that must be grown into, not manufactured."

The expert explained that he had relocated from the Far East to the United Kingdom at the time of childhood, and had been brought up understanding and practicing two backgrounds. He progressed to be educated at the University of Cambridge.

The executive was the first person originating from mainland China to be chosen to the role of Finance Head of the university debating society.

"The idea that one individual can serve as a representation of Britishness, someone who can possibly impart the attributes of a British gentleman upon a infant child, appears idealistic and impractical," he commented.

"In my experience, employing a distinctly UK tutor from early childhood will will not automatically create the result they hope for.

"I never had such a figure, and nevertheless I have been lucky enough to live several of the experiences they hope for their son."

He stated: "The fact is, personal identity cannot be imposed from the outside; it must be selected, and it must come from within."

Acquiring Englishness

Of course, Britishness is something Adam hopes can be taught – and sold.

"I think the fact that the international society regards us in this regard is something that we should be cherishing|valuing|appreciating
